Chapter Eighteen

Alfi Ricci was watching his chef at Benito’s put the finishing touches to the cake for his son’s tenth birthday party later that day, when his head waiter came bursting through the kitchen doors.

‘He’s here again, Alfi,’ the waiter said. ‘That big Russian guy.’

Alfi’s face fell.

‘Aw, for fuck’s sake! Who’s with the prick?’

‘That same knuckle-trailer from the last time.’

‘Jesus fucking wept!’

Alfi could feel his insides churning. He’d pulled out all the stops for this bastard to try and flush Wolfie out. He’d even sent Nick and the boys to Glasgow to get information out of one of the Casey crew. And to his surprise it had been successful, with this Alex bloke telling him that the Caseys were off to Amsterdam, and as far as he knew they were moving diamonds to a dealer there. Nick didn’t even have to strong-arm anyone to get the information. He just threw money at the bastard and he spilled it out. Whatever the Russians did with the information was up to them. Alfi had kept his side of the deal so they could fuck right off. But he knew they wouldn’t. He shook his head, puffed out a sigh and strode through the kitchen, throwing open the swing doors to the restaurant.

‘Yuri!’ He spread his hands as he walked towards the Russians. ‘What a surprise! You are here for lunch? To celebrate?’

The big Russian was stony-faced and dead-eyed. He shook his head.

‘No. Not to celebrate.’

Alfi made sure his face showed nothing, and he shrugged a little. He motioned them to a booth and the Russian and his sidekick moved across and slid in. Alfi sat opposite them, feeling a little warm under his collar. He hated this bastard – something about the raw power he exuded made Alfi feel small.

‘So,’ Alfi looked Yuri in the eye. ‘You have a problem? My information was good, that much I’m sure of.’

Yuri nodded. ‘Your information was good. We went to Amsterdam, found where the Caseys were, and ambushed them.’ He looked down at the table and Alfi saw the muscle in his jaw tighten. ‘Well. We tried to.’

Alfi sat back. Epic fail. He managed to conceal his delight.

‘Oh. Did the Casey crew get away from your boys? That’s a pity.’ He glanced from Yuri to his sidekick. ‘Because sometimes you only get one shot at it.’

Alfi waved to the waiter and when he came across to the table, he gestured to the pair. ‘Coffee? Something stronger?’ He was still in the shit with this bastard, but he was enjoying Yuri having to admit failure. Everyone ordered coffee.

‘They got away,’ Yuri muttered. ‘We have to work out a new way to get to them.’

‘So do you think the Caseys were over there moving the diamonds to some dealer?’

Yuri shrugged. ‘For sure. But we don’t know who. Amsterdam is full of dealers.’

Alfi was enjoying this. The only thing that dulled the pain of him losing the millions of pounds’ worth of diamonds his boys stole in the heist was the fact it didn’t look like this bastard was getting them back.
